More Taxes, Less Freedom

Yesterday at work I was going through the mail when I came across a Notice from the Illinois Department of Revenue. It stated that as of September 01, 2009, products which they cited as “non-food and non-medical” would have an increased tax. This includes candy, soft drinks, and personal hygiene products.  So what is the government trying to encourage, a population of skinny smelly people? No, I think it’s all about control.

Living in Illinois I’ve dealt with my share of lousy government- corrupt politicians, unnecessary smoking bans, and people so Obama crazy you would think they were a prepubescent girl at a Jonas Brother’s Concert. However, when I saw the notice I became worried and had to wonder what was next.

Taxation without representation now seems to be a growing trend. Our government recently passed the Cap and Trade bill.. A bill that I have yet to see fully explained. My guess is that it’s hard to explain something when you yourself have yet to fully read and comprehend it. Supposedly this bill was created to help stop that awful, world shattering, polar bear killing monster known as Global Warming.

Some sources I have seen claim that this bill would cost the average family $175 per year by 2020; other sources put the cost at over $1600 a year by the year 2020. Don’t we all have an extra $175-$1600 lying around?

The worst thing about the tax increases is that things such as the Cap and Trade bill are passed without disclosure to the American people. I seem to remember Mr. Obama stating that he would post all bills online prior to any voting in order to allow citizens time to form an opinion and express their questions and concerns. Seems he must have forgotten. Maybe he’s too busy sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong or maybe he had one too many beer summits. At any rate, I feel that this is unacceptable.

I’m not saying that all taxes are evil. They are necessary in order for our country to function; however, with being taxed, I expect to have my interests represented. I have a real issue with tax increases being passed that are unnecessary or in the case of the Cap and Trade bill, passed to aid the fight against Global Warming which in my opinion, is merely a political ploy and unnacepted theory, not the “fact” that so many “authorities” of climatology want us to see it as.

It seems that people have forgotten that our country was founded on the idea of liberty and freedom. Our founding fathers faught the oppresion of King George and sacrificed their comfort, homes, and lives for the idea of less government control and greater freedom. Now it seems that we are losing more and more freedom on a daily basis.

The government was designed to work for the people, composed of the people, not to control and regulate the people. Just remember with each tax they levy comes control.

An attempt to regulate and control what and how much you eat, spend, and the amount of energy you consume.

I can just imagine our founding fathers cursing in their graves, wondering what has become of the principles they founded this country on.  I think is about time that people start remembering our roots and strive to keep our government accountable for the unnecessary and careless taxation that seems to becoming more common as Mr. Obama’s presidency continues.

Personally I want to continue to live in a country based on freedom and opportunity, not one based on control. It’s time to stand up for our freedom
